Statement of Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) on 19th Anniversary of 1990 Election Day (24 May 2009)
24 May 2009

To

Respectful all students, monks, people of Burma and democratic forces around the world,

May 24, 2009 is the 19th Anniversary of 1990 Election Day. Last 19 years ago, military which came to power after bloody coup held the elections in 1990 and 246 parties contested. Military coup leader Senior General Saw Maung promised to hand over power to election wining party and said that military will go back to barracks. They imprisoned Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, Min Ko Naing and democracy activists but at that time there wasn’t a constitution which will perpetuate military rule.

People of Burma voted for Aung San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy (NLD) and showed their support. By using mandate given by the people, NLD held the Gandhi Conference and launched the Committee Representing People’s Parliament (CRPP), planned to set up National Coalition Government of Union of Burma (NCGUB) in order to establish democratic country by means of applying people power and diplomatic pressure.

Ruling junta replaced Senior General Saw Maung with Senior General Than Shwe, changed the name of the military coup from SLORC to SPDC, with order 11/92 held the facade National Convention to draft sham Constitution and adopted unilaterally in charade referendum and declare to hold fresh election in 2010 in order to nullify 1990 election result.

In the mean time, junta cracked down very brutally on 1990 Inside Insein Prison Movement, 1991 Movement for to Release Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners, New Waves of 1996 Students’ Demonstrations, 9999 Students Movements, and 2007 Saffron Revolution and imprisoned thousands of political activists.

At the same time, junta increased the military offensive on ethnics’ armed groups supporting 1990 election result. When Cyclone Nargis struck Burma on 2 and 3 May 2008, instead of helping the victims junta prioritised to adopt the sham constitution in rigged referendum and disregarding the people’s will.

Junta’s planned 2010 election is designed to legitimised military rule in Burma. To pave the way for their rigged 2010 election plan, junta continue imprisoning democracy activists, plotting the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi and doing everything they can to nullify 1990 election results.

We, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) call for all the people of Burma along with the democratic forces around the world to work collectively and decisively

1. To free Aung San Suu Kyi, Min Ko Naing and all political prisoners
2. To oppose 2008 sham military constitution
3. To oppose planned rigged 2010 election
4. To implement 1990 election result in order to establish Democratic Burma
