Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) call for United Nations Security Council to take practical action on Burma (11 Nov 2008)
11 Nov 2008

UNSC must take practical action on Burma

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) today again called for United Nations Security Council to take practical action on Burma because WORDS alone are not enough to restore JUSTICE in Burma.

International Community has been calling for military regime to release all political prisoners as the sign of progress for many years. But, Aung San Suu Kyi is still under house arrest and the results of the 1990 elections are not honoured yet. Suppressing on democracy activists intensified more than before and passed down long term prison sentences including their defence counsels.

Recently, fourteen well-known democracy activists have been sentenced to 65 years imprisonment due to their leading role in the 2007 Saffron Revolution.

Burma crisis is now in CRITICAL situation. Military regime is fully geared up to crush down all democratic forces in order to silent the public to instigate fear and to pave the way to hold illegitimate elections in 2010 in which they are set to win to perpetuate military rule in Burma before implementing the results of 1990 elections in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won landslide victory.

Burmese military might think that they are in final stage of legitimizing military rule in Burma and they will use ultimate forces to extinguish all the democratic forces.

“Without the United Nations Security Council’s practical intervention, there will be more bloodshed and more lives will be lost in order to defend Justice and human rights in Burma. I would like to call for United Nations Security Council to stand by with justice in Burma by taking practical action”, said Zayar Linn, Campaign Officer at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom.
