United Nations Got the Obligation to Restore Justice in Burma (22 Oct 2008)

United Nations Got the Obligation to Restore Justice in Burma

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) called for United Nations to take serious precedence action on Burma, especially United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s more personal engagement and United Nations Security Council’s binding resolution on Burma.

Recently, Ban Ki-Moon announced that he would not go to Burma unless there is a significant progress in Burma. Let us make it clear that Burma crisis needs ultimate attentions and actions taken from both United Nations Secretary General and United Nations Security Council. This is the reason why he must go to Burma because there is no substantial political progress for 20 years.

Burmese military government released 9002 prisoners of which only 6 political prisoners prior to concurrent with the United Nations’ General Assembly. They wanted to take credit by releasing 6 political prisoners. But in reality, there are thousands of political prisoners in Burma facing injustice.

By judging the acts of Burmese military regime in the past, it is very worrying that Burma’s jails got 9002 vacancies in case of arresting political activists. Burmese military regime never grantee that they will not re-arresting political dissidents and they will practice democratic principles ruling the country, i.e. freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of speech, etc.

Above all, Aung San Suu Kyi has been calling for genuine time-bound dialogue but regime fails to cooperate and declared that they are planning to hold another election in 2010 without honoring the 1990 elections results in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, National League for Democracy (NLD), won landslide victory.

In May 2008, in the mist of the devastated Cyclone Nargis which killed more than 200,000 and displaced 2.5 million people, military junta prioritized to adopt sham constitution unilaterally which was drawn by its hand-picked delegation for 14 years in order to legitimize military rule in Burma.

Burma crisis has been happening for nearly half the century and it has been a forgotten crisis. We must have more vigorous and bolder intervention of United Nations in Burma more than ever. Military government is trying everything they can to entrench military dictatorship in Burma and the question is what will UN do, given that people of Burma expressed their will already overwhelmingly by voting for Aung San Suu Kyi as their leader in 1990 elections.

United Nations and military government have the obligation to implement the result of 1990 election accordingly. This is totally unacceptable that elections were held and without honouring them. We should not let it happen not only in Burma but also in the world at large. Knowing that United Nations organisation is standing to promote peace, security, social justice, human rights protection, good governance and the democratic process and we are very encouraged about that. But we wanted to see more deeds rather than words.

Ban Ki-Moon must go to Burma now with the back of United Nations Security Council and press military regime

• to honour 1990 elections results
• to take place genuine time-bound dialogue between democratic forces led by Aung San Suu Kyi and junta’s leader Senior General Than Shwe
• to allow the elected MPs of 1990 elections to convene People’s Assembly
• to drop 2010 election game plan before implementing 1990 elections results
• to release all political prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi immediately and unconditionally
• to set up the United Nations Secretary General’s special representative office in Burma to facilitate dialogue process and to monitor the progress

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) asked United Nations to make an effort to see long suffering of Burmese people and question that how much more should BURMESE people die to take serious action on Burma.

United Nations must set the time frame to the Burmese military regime to do genuine time bound dialogue with democratic forces led by Aung San Suu Kyi, transitional period and actually transferring power.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) will hold the demonstration in front of the UN office in London on 24th October 2008, which is the 63rd Anniversary of United Nations’ Day, to demand the United Nations to take vigorous and bolder intervention in Burma crisis.
