BDC 07 August 2008 Press Release (07 August 2008 )
07 Aug 2008

Burma has been under the military dictatorship for nearly half the century. The military has dominated government since General Ne Win led a coup in 1962 to 1988, first as military ruler, then as a self-appointed president, and later as political kingpin. In 1988, student led the uprising and eventually managed to topple the one party rule led by General Ne Win. On the 8th August 1988, the largest anti-government protesters were came out to the streets and demanded the democracy and human rights. Another military came to power and gun down more than 3000 protesters.

Burmese people show their aspiration for democracy and freedom with blood, sweat and tears. Ruthless military butchered un-armed peaceful demonstrators cruelly. Since then, we have been in the Dark Age again under more repressive and suppressive military regime. The military regime uses murder, torture, rape, political imprisonment and forced labour as practices for ruling the citizens of Burma. Freedom of expression and freedom of association are non-existent and Burmese citizens are denied any state in the shaping of their future.

Twenty years on of 8.8.88 massacre in Burma, Burmese people are still suffering under the one of the world's most brutal regime. Burma's economic crisis continues to deepen under military rule. People earn on a wage of around $1 a day. Unemployment is rising dramatically every month while prices of consumer goods are escalating out of control. One child in three under the age of five is already suffering from malnutrition, less than 50 per cent of children will complete five years of education according to UN reports.

In Burma, people face complete lack of access to basic social services such as health services, and water sanitation. Under the military generals, poverty has soared and corruption is growing. Burma spends less than $3 per person per year on health and education – well below the World Health Organization recommended level of $40 per person. The economic crisis and instability in Burma is driving waves of Burmese children into hard labour, begging and the sex trade.

The worst forms of child labour can be seen in Burma –there are 70, 000 children in the army and largest child soldiers in the world. Currently, there are more than 2000 political prisoners in Burma and regime continues to arrest democratic dissident, torture and sentence to prison. Military regime in Burma can still hold on power due to the Chinese government sheltering them. With the support of the Chinese military equipments, the army become 4 times the size with nearly 500, 000 soldiers since 1989. This is the time to send the powerful and united message to the Chinese government that we don't want military regime and Chinese government must stop using VETO.

We can't wait any more and we don't want military regime in Burma. We want democracy, freedom and human rights. Burma Democratic Concern, National League for Democracy (Liberated Area)-UK, Democratic Party for New Society (DPNS)-UK, Burma Muslims Association-UK, Women of Burma-UK and Burmese Community will protest in front of the Chinese Embassy on 8th August 2008 from 10:00 together with activist from Zimbabwe, Tibet and Sudan who protest against Chinese VETO and Chinese brutal suppression on demonstration.

The link is that all four countries are victims of China’s use of its veto in the UN Security Council to protect human rights abusers. The demonstration will culminate at 13.08 when the Burmese and Tibetan flags will be raised, accompanied by the national anthems of the four countries. We will be joined by the Falun Gong who has been protesting in support of freedom outside the Chinese Embassy for many years.
