Burma Democratic Concern today condemned ASEAN Secretary General’s comment on relief work carrying out in Burma and urged its leaders to press more on Burmese Generals rather than advocating for them.

ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan said on 18 June 2008 that "We are being baptised by Cyclone Nargis," and kept on saying "nearly 300,000 volunteers, have been given full support and reached the areas where they wanted to go."

Surin’s comment is misleading and covering the truth, in reality only hundred on the ground and they cannot move freely and face restriction.

“I am very upset that Surin is advocating for murderer regime. ASEAN is sheltering the Burmese junta which killed its own people and cannot take effective action. Knowing that ASEAN is on their side, junta will commit more brutal crimes”, said Kyaw Lin Oo, Director of the Burma Democratic Concern in Thailand.

ASEAN knows that current military regime butchered more than 3000 peaceful demonstrators in 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters were ambushed by junta in 2003, and soldiers killed peaceful Buddhist monks in 2007 Saffron revolution. Recently, May 2 and 3, 2008 military junta’s slow and systematic delaying respond to the cyclone Nargis victims to do relief work and to accept aid in, ASEAN witnesses it and trying to cover it up for Burmese generals.

Junta is committing crime against humanity by refusing and neglecting the welfare of its own people, imprisoning political dissidents, suppressing individuals’ rights and killing peaceful demonstrators.

“ASEAN is becoming more and more Burmese junta’s hiding ground where they can do whatever they want and ASEAN won’t take any meaningful action in the name of “non-interference of in the internal affairs of one another and get away with it,” added Kyaw Lin Oo.

ASEAN leaders failed to press for military regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and neglect the human rights abuses happening in Burma. Burma’s long standing political crises should be solved by now and we have seen no concrete actions taken by ASEAN.

We would like to urge ASEAN leaders to press more to the Burmese Generals to do genuine dialogue with 1990 elections wining party’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi leading to transfer the power in order to see true regional peace, progress and prosperity.
