13 June 2008

Burma Democratic Concern today called for the Burmese military regime to release all political prisoners including Myo Aung Thant, a prominent Burmese workers’ union leader who has been imprisoned since 1997. Today Myo Aung Thant has been imprisoning unlawfully for eleven years. Myo Aung Thant committed his life for the restoration of the workers’ rights and democracy in Burma. Due to his determined effort promoting for workers’ rights and democracy, Myo Aung Thant has to pay for the price very heavily. He was arrested on 13 June 1997 and faced brutal torture during interrogation and tried at the secret military court.

“The military regime uses murder, torture, rape, political imprisonment and forced labour as practices for ruling the citizens of Burma. Freedom of expression and freedom of association are non-existent while forced labour is usually imposed on citizens and the worst forms of child labour can be seen in Burma,” said Myo Thein, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in United Kingdom.

Myo Aung Thant got no access to any independent counsel or to due process of law and was sentenced to prison for life. Myo Aung Thant’s wife, Aye Mar Gyi, was also detained and sentenced to 10 years in jail. They have to leave behind two young daughters at the time of theirs arrest.

The military control entirely over the legal system and denies basic rights to due process of law, a fair and public trial in political cases. Political prisoners are very vulnerable at the hands of brutal military regime. Without the international pressure, they will face more cruel and inhumane treatments.

“I would like to call for international community to help us practically and realistically. Please support our movement for freedom with the collective actions focused on peaceful transition of transfer of power to legitimate leader, Nobel peace laureate, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. If the regime truly wanted to see national reconciliation in Burma, they must release all political prisoners and come to discussion table and do genuine dialogue with 1990 Elections wining party NLD led by people’s leader,” said Khin Maung Win, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in United States.

Military junta is denying the basic human rights, killing its own people and hindering the aid to the victims of cyclone.

“Where is the world body we can rely on which stand firmly in the case of massacre, in the case of crime against humanity, in the case of imprisoning dissidents, killing civilians or shooting peaceful demonstrators? The world should not be blind or deaf to the outcry of the Burmese people calling for practical action to sort out Burma’s crisis”, said Aye Mar Gyi, wife of Myo Aung Thant.

Myo Aung Thant is now held in Myitkyina prison, Kachin state, in Burma's far north, held isolated in a tiny windowless cell where temperature is below zero. His family members have not been able to visit hardly more than once every three months because of the cost of travelling there and the distance of the prison. The military junta uses the tactics of transferring long distance places from where they live as the punishment so that possibility of visiting prisoners becomes difficult for their family.

“Military junta uses both physical and emotional torture, inhumane and degrading treatment and denying medical treatment as a way of punishing the political prisoners. We always remember and salute unsung heroes of Burma who sacrifice their lives for the whole country, for the people and for the next generation”, said Kyaw Lin Oo, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in Thailand.

Burma Democratic Concern strongly urged military junta to free all political prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi and Myo Aung Thant.
