(Burma Democratic Concern today called for the international community to put more pressure on Burmese regime(10 June 2008)

Burma Democratic Concern today called for the international community to put more pressure on Burmese regime to fully co-operate with the aid agencies and to give free access and longer period of stay in cyclone affected areas in order to speed up relief and rehabilitation works.

Free access to the Irrawaddy delta region for international aid workers and logistical experts is still a huge challenge even five weeks after the cyclone Nargis hit Burma. They are restricted from staying over nights and long periods.

“This is proofing that regime is not fully cooperating with international aid agencies and we must put more pressure on the Burmese junta” said Myo Thein, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in United Kingdom.

We have reports from inside Burma that regime is hindering access to the Irrawaddy delta especially local relief organisations. Some organization even cannot hire car or truck to get there due to regime’s reprisal.

“They are now feared of under attack by junta. This is very disappointing”, said Khin Maung Win, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in United States.

The authority accused the helpers of selling news to media and wrongdoers. A lot of cyclone victims received very little or no assistance yet especially hard to reach areas of Irrawaddy delta. Still thousands of victims are exposed to heavy rain without shelter. Millions of survivors depend on aid from international and local aid agencies.

“Regime is preventing from reaching desperate survivors enough food, water and shelter. Instead aid for the cyclone victims must be a most important priority”, said Kyaw Lin Oo, Director of Burma Democratic Concern in Thailand.

A lot of victims needed not only material assistance but also counselling in order to cope with tragic event they were faced. Especially children are very vulnerable. Most of the cyclone victims are farmers. They still needed food, clean water, shelter, seeds, cattle, fertilizer and farming equipment to rebuild their lives.

“United Nations’ role in Burma crisis is very upsetting as Ban Ki Moon and international community is giving up Than Shwe and cannot take effective actions”, added Kyaw Lin Oo.
